By Izzy Donoghue, Dalia Diab, Z Weber, and Faith Newman
After a year-long hiatus from the streets of Nashville, we have decided to make our return with a winter edition of Izzy and Dalia on the Street. In light of last year’s events, when the angry posse of old people chased us down the street after being asked about President Biden, we came prepared with a crew: Faith Newman, our designated bodyguard, and Z Weber, our camera and sound person.
We started off at the Apple Store on Broadway, where Dalia asked the first question.
Dalia: “Excuse me sir, can I ask you a question for the newspaper I work for?”
Man: “No”
This was the first of many “no’s”. We weren’t used to being shot down, especially since we don’t exactly look like the most intimidating group of people.
At this point, we were 0 for 5 and aimlessly walking around until we spotted a nice couple near the Pred’s Stadium.
Question 1: “What’s your biggest pet peeve?”
The nice couple: “hmm.. leaving clothes on the floor? Washing his [her husband’s] wallet in his clothes.”
We kept the momentum going and approached a chill couple outside a honky tonk.
Question 2: “What’s the top thing on your bucket list?”
Man: “Uhhh”
Woman: “It’s a school newspaper. Think before you speak.”
Man: “School newspaper right.. Uhh yeah shoot. Northern lights. To see the northern lights.”
Next, we saw a man dressed as a bush. He was literally covered head to toe in fake leaves and ivy. We knew we had to speak with him.
Question 3: “What’s something that’s overrated?”
Bushman: “ [after a significant amount of deliberation] I can’t think of anything.”
Us: “Nothing’s overrated?”
Bushman: *chuckles* “I can’t think of anything.”
Us: “Give us some thoughts or who is a celebrity that’s overrated?”
Bushman: “Peewee Herman. Do you even know who that is?”
Us: “Is he alive?”
Bushman: “Probably not.”
We circled back to the corner of the apple store.
Question 4: “If you could have three wishes what would they be?”
Young woman: “To be rich, to be rich, and to be rich.”
Fair enough.
Izzy really wanted to ask people their thoughts on the Kanye West and Pete Davidson drama. If you don’t know what we are referencing, please look at this screenshot of Kanye’s Instagram.
However, we knew we couldn’t ask just any random person their thoughts on the drama. We lurked around until we found a group of boys similar in age to us who looked like they would know the situation.
Question 5: “Kanye or Pete Davidson?”
Boy 1: “Kanye”
Boy 2: “[referring to Pete Davidson] I don’t even know who that is.”
Let’s just say, we were disappointed that none of them knew what was going down between Kanye and Pete.
After the failed “Kanye or Pete Davidson” question, we got stuck in a rut of rejection. It was starting to get demoralizing, so we walked towards 5th + Broadway for a Shake Shack break. We decided to test our luck one last time and approached a large group of 9th grade boys and girls, or what we assume were 8th or 9th graders, taking couples’s pictures. Expecting to get shot down, we were shocked by their desire to be interviewed on camera. They were probably really excited to hold Z’s tiny microphone. We took advantage of their enthusiasm and asked the group several questions.
Question 6: “What’s something that’s overrated?”
Boy 1: “Chick-fil-a
The rest of the group simultaneously responded, “ooh I agree… I agree.”
Girl 1: “Crumbl cookies… they make me sick.”
Another Boy: “Hattie B’s… so overrated.”
Question 7: “What’s something you’re embarrassed to admit you like?”
At this point it was hard to keep track of who said what, so here are the group’s collective responses: “Cottage cheese” and “tiktok.”
Question 8 (an Izzy and Dalia on the Street classic): “Who’s the hottest member of One Direction?”
Responses include: “Niall… Harry Styles… but he wears dresses.”
We’ll just pretend that the boys didn’t just bash Harry Styles like that. Anyways, thank you to the group of 9th grade boys and girls who saved this segment of Izzy and Dalia on the Street.
Our last interviewee was our very own Faith Newman’s sister, Jess.
Question 9: “What’s your guilty pleasure?”
Jess: “Ice cream. I’m lactose intolerant so it’s real guilty… real guilty.”
