Homecoming is a stressful time of year. You need an outfit, dinner reservations, pictures, plans — who has time for all that? So, if this is your first Homecoming, or you just feel like you didn’t nail it last year (because let’s be honest, who did?), join my senior friends and me for some advice on how to do Homecoming right.
DON’T feel pressured to have a date – Grace Douglas
I wholeheartedly stand by this piece of advice. Now, you’re probably thinking, “Sydney, stop trying to turn this into a girlboss thing just because you’ve never gotten asked to Homecoming.” First, rude! Second, you’ll notice that this year, most of the senior class doesn’t have dates. Honestly, that’s just because the general consensus among us is that having a date is a ton of work, when it’s just way more fun to hang out with your friends. If you want to have a date, no shade! But never feel pressured to find someone to go with because “everybody has a date.” It’s so much easier and more fun if you just fly solo with a group of super fun people.
DO prepare – Alex Pratt
Preparation is essential to a good Homecoming night. Everybody’s pre-hoco plans look different. For some, it’s a nice dinner with your Hoco group at a fancy place like J. Alexander’s or Sperry’s. For others, a dinner at somewhere like LaHa or P.F Chang’s fits the bill. There’s no substantial food at the dance, so filling up before is important. Also, make sure that wherever you go is a place that your whole group can afford!
DON’T forget to drink water – Jack Boger
This is a big one. Homecoming culminates in a super sweaty mosh pit, and if you’re not hydrated, you will have issues.
DO bring extra shoes if you’re wearing heels – Amelia Cavin
Also essential. Sure, the shoes look nice, but you will have weeks of blisters if you keep them on. Flip-flops or sandals are great, and there’s always an area at the dance to store them if you don’t want them on you all night.
DON’T be afraid to get jiggy with it – Liz Napier
Despite the absurd phrasing, I agree with Liz. Homecoming is a DANCE, so don’t be one of those people who stands off to the side and doesn’t dance! Everyone is so engrossed in the music and their friends that they won’t make fun of your dancing or really even notice. Case in point: I’m a horrible dancer and literally ripped my dress at prom from dancing too hard, and it was tons of fun!
DO keep your phone charged
Altogether, Homecoming is SUPPOSED to be fun, so don’t stress about it and make it unfun! This is the seniors’ final Hoco and we intend to have a blast, so be prepared to get down or face the consequences.
