Halloween Media to Enjoy If You Hate Horror

By Walker Kesler

Halloween. A time for candy, frights, and fun. But if you’re anything like me, the second thing in that list doesn’t appeal to you that much. In fact, you might want to stay away from frights as much as possible. But if you are a big scaredy cat like me, the question remains: How are you supposed to enjoy some fun Halloween media without being afraid every five minutes? This article has you covered. These movie, TV, and video game recommendations are completely horror-free and in keeping with the spirit of Halloween, so you won’t be this holiday’s Scrooge.

Movies

Refusing to watch Halloween Ends and Smile this year? Me too! Maybe try these movies:

Ghostbusters (1984)

This classic 80’s comedy starring Bill Murry, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis follows three paranormal researchers who use their findings to start a ghost removal service in New York. Quotable one-liners and hilarious slapstick make Ghostbusters one of the funniest movies of its decade. However, its focus on the undead makes it a perfect movie for the spooky season. Just remember: Don’t cross the streams.

The Addams Family (1991)

Another great comedy for Halloween, The Addams Family follows Gomez Addams and his family when a man comes to them claiming to be Fester, the long-lost brother of Gomez. Though they welcome him back into the home, the family is unaware that Fester is a fraud working for a scheming lawyer who is attempting to swindle the Addams family out of their home. The movie’s black humor and macabre tone make it a Halloween essential for anyone who’s fine with a living severed hand. If that’s too scary though, I’ve got nothing for you.

TV

American Horror Story and Black Mirror a little much? Don’t worry, here’s something fun to watch:

The Simpsons: “Treehouse of Horror” Specials

Starting in The Simpsons’ second season, the “Treehouse of Horror” shorts are widely considered the greatest Halloween specials to air on a television show. Each short usually lampoons an iconic story that has anything to do with the spirit of Halloween, and the special usually messes with The Simpsons canon in some hilarious ways. One of my favorite “TOH” episodes is number five, which involves a Shining parody, a time-traveling toaster, and cannibal teachers at Bart and Lisa’s school. Even if you aren’t a fan of The Simpsons, these episodes are a great time for anyone looking for something to binge on October 31st.

Gravity Falls

Though this show only takes place in a singular summer, nowhere near October, Gravity Falls’ paranormal mysteries and colorful cast of creatures make this cartoon a perfect Halloween watch. Following twins Dipper and Mabel Pines, the show deals with the siblings’ investigations into the titular town of Oregon using a mysterious journal they found in the woods. While it may be an animated Disney show, don’t pass this one up. Its intricate plots and hilarious cast of characters make this a fun watch for any age group. If you’re looking for a specific episode, my recommendation this month would be “Summerween” which deals with a holiday made up by the town so they could celebrate Halloween twice. A perfect episode for the season.

Video Games

Won’t even consider Resident Evil Village or The Quarry? Here are some low-stress video games to play.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

A great game to play this time of the year for the same reason Ghostbusters is a great watch: Ghosts. Luigi’s Mansion 3 revolves around Luigi as he tries to save his friends from the ghost King Boo inside a giant hotel. To progress through the different floors of the building, Luigi must catch ghosts who possess the buttons to the hotel elevator using his Poltergust G-00, a device that can suck ghosts up like a vacuum. The game takes a very lighthearted tone since it’s a Nintendo game, but that makes it a perfect experience for anyone who’s faint of heart. Fighting ghosts is really entertaining, and the puzzles are well thought out as well. Anyone looking for a fun ghost-hunting adventure should really check out this game starring the too-often-overlooked Mario brother.

Batman: Arkham Knight

What makes Arkham Knight a great Halloween video game? It stars a man in a bat costume running around a giant city in the middle of the night hunting costumed villains on Halloween night. Doesn’t get more Halloween than that. What is, in my opinion, the best game in the Arkham franchise, Knight follows Batman hunting down Scarecrow in an evacuated Gotham City now populated entirely by criminals. The combat is super fluid and the story and atmosphere give the game this feeling of darkness and hopelessnesses– perfect vibes for a Halloween game. WARNING: THIS GAME DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THE PREVIOUS GAME IN THE SERIES, ARKHAM CITY. I DO RECOMMEND PLAYING CITY FIRST IF YOU CARE ABOUT THE OVERALL STORY.

I hope you enjoy some of these recommendations. And I hope your Halloween is completely fear-free this year (if that’s your goal).
