It’s that time of the year again! Christmas is right around the corner, and believe it or not, so is winter break! Don’t get me wrong, I love celebrating the holidays with my family, but I NEED a break. I know we just had Thanksgiving break, but after exams, I will need another one ASAP. However, since it is now the holiday season, we can all start discussing the most heated debate of the season. No, I am not talking about when you should play Christmas music, or when you should decorate your house. I am discussing whether you should use a real or fake Christmas tree during this year’s holiday season.
All these years, my family has been notorious for having a fake tree that we reuse each year. However, this has me wondering what it would be like to have a real tree just sitting in my house. While fake trees are less messy, real trees give your house a certain holiday smell that makes it feel more “Christmasy.” However, with real trees, you do have to take care of them. This is not one of those plants you can shove in the corner and forget about for months. Christmas trees require quite a lot of preparation and attention when it comes to taking care of them. This much attention is not needed for fake trees which is why if your family is like mine and doesn’t have a “green thumb,” then a fake tree might be better. The other thing about Christmas or the holiday season, in general, is the traditions that come with it. If your family is big on traditions, then picking out a Christmas tree might be the one for you. Whether you like real or fake trees, the process of picking out one is always a moment where memories are made. These memories can last a lifetime and can create further traditions for generations to come.
In the end, it depends on what you prefer and how much time you want to spend on your holiday preparation. If your family is a big “plant family” or just knows how to take care of plants, then a real tree might be the best choice for you. However, if your family is like mine, then the closest you will get to actually buying a Christmas tree is buying the scented sticks to put in your fake tree (yes, those actually exist). While I prefer fake trees because they don’t require much attention, you might prefer a real tree.
The classic holiday debate of real vs. fake Christmas trees will never have one answer. Everything depends on what you and your family want to do. However, remember whatever you choose is part of your holiday celebrations, so let’s make the most of this holiday season before the new year.
