Artist Guild is an incredible way for many of our very talented BGA students to express themselves through their creativity and talent in the arts. With our show coming up on February 2nd, you must be wondering what the Guild is all about. Well, I’m here to tell you!
History
In the year 1987, two students approached the Art Department Chair, Carol Lea-Mord, with an idea for recognizing artists on campus. After speaking with this art teacher, they knew what they had to do next: create a guild… for artists. Thus, the Artist Guild was born.
Mission
Artist Guild is essentially an arts honor society–an audition-based way to recognize those who excel in the arts. The mission statement explains that the Guild was created to recognize the outstanding achievements of students involved in literature and the visual/performing arts.
Process
Students who are selected into the Guild for vocal and dance talent must present two pieces with different styles to showcase their versatility. If students are in a band, they are encouraged to perform original music pieces. Visual performers create six to eight developed works of art, and literary students submit a portfolio of poems, short stories, or even novels. A combination of BGA faculty and outside judges assess each audition for acceptance into the Guild. The selected students sign a contract that expresses how they are expected to demonstrate continued growth over the course of the year.
Guild Night
On Guild Night, the recognized students get together to perform their acts and present their pieces of art. These students have demonstrated a lot of courage to endure this rigorous process of being selected, so we encourage you to go see them perform their different acts on February 2nd in the CAE! Senior Carson Coco will be the emcee for the show.
