My Bloody Valentine

By Lili-Claire Nichols

Ah yes, Valentine’s Day. The day when couples get together to spend time with one another. Loved ones get to spoil each other with dollar-store chocolate, while those who are single on Valentine’s Day either wallow in self-pity or gladly show their status on social media. With all these sappy feelings going on, some might never think to mix horror into this fluff-filled day. However, others might say that watching a gore-filled movie is the best way to celebrate this particular holiday. So, do horror movies belong on Valentine’s Day? Should anything scary be even related to this holiday? In my personal opinion, yes! Not all horror movies are all blood and guts. There are a fair number that focus on family dynamics and morals, or love in general. There are even a couple movies based off Valentine’s Day! So before you completely throw away the idea of curling up in a soft blanket, your significant other draped over you while screaming at the dumb blonde not to open that door, here are some horror movies to think about:

  1. Scream (1996)

I love this movie, so I am a little biased. However, it is a classic that gets more of a teenager’s point of view without as many idiotic decisions. Just watch it, trust me.

  1. World War Z (2013)

This movie is wholesome and scary at the same time. The family dynamics are what make this movie one of my favorite horror movies and one that is perfect to watch on Valentine’s Day.

  1. A Quiet Place (2018)

Once more, the family dynamic takes over; sad, terrifying, and wholesome all in one.

  1. The Menu (2022)

For all the foodies, this horror movie carries deep symbolism. It has outstanding food that will have your mouth watering while you sit on the edge of your seat.

  1. Valentine (2001)

Although I have never personally seen this movie, its name is connected to the holiday.

  1. Psycho (1960)

A great black-and-white classic with high tensions and minimal gore. Don’t let the lack of color scare you away.

  1. Us (2019)

Hauntingly beautiful.

  1. The Meg (2018)

Who wouldn’t want to watch a giant shark eat people?

  1. The Train to Busan (2016)

A Korean horror/action film that delves deeper into selfishness and self-reflection. The subtitles aren’t bad, and the zombies will give you a scare or two.

  1. Nope (2022)

A little alien wouldn’t hurt you.

  1. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

If you have never watched this movie, here is your excuse! Just some food for thought, did we ever see the kids make it out of the factory?

  1. Trolls (2016)

No explanation needed.

The last one scares me every time. Anyway, good luck with your bloody valentine!
