AP English Class Competition

By Rylee Cason

This year, Ms. Handelsman continued her tradition of the AP English class reading competitions. If you are unfamiliar with this event, here are a few things you need to know. Each of the four AP English classes (two junior classes and two senior classes) read two different novels over the month of January and part of February. The AP Lang classes read The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, while the AP Lit classes read Wuthering Heights by Emily Brönte. Each night, the students are assigned chapters to read and study for a reading quiz the next day. These challenging quizzes can foil even the most fastidious reader! Anything less than 100% is not acceptable. All classes compete against one another for victory. When the novel is complete, the class with the highest average wins a delicious dinner at THE Ms. Handelsman’s house.

Ms. Handelsman had great hope for her senior classes to pull out a win for the first time in several years. However, the AP Lit classes proved they had no chance of winning the meal at her house. The competition came down between the two junior classes who had been neck and neck the entire time. Finally, by the final reading quiz for The Count of Monte Cristo, Ms. Handelsman’s C period was declared victorious. A period had been the winner in everyone’s minds since the beginning. They truly had everyone assuming they were the top dogs of the competition, but to all four classes’ surprise, the underdogs (C period) came out on top.
