Big Brother 27 Hot Takes: Cheating scandals, Humor, DRAMA

By Bella Brothers and Parker Compton

Big Brother, like many other reality TV shows, is a social experiment in which 16 (or in this season 17) players compete against each other in order to win the $750,000 grand prize. Throughout the game, there are a series of competitions ranging from endurance, to intelligence, to strategy, that allow players to advance in the game with different advantages. The head of household (HOH) starts out the week, with the winner guaranteed safety and power for the rest of the week. After the HOH puts up three people for their nominations (also known as putting players on the block), the power of veto is played, and the winner is able to take off a single person from the block, forcing the HOH to rename a replacement. On eviction night, the BB Blockbuster is played in which the winner is off the block and only two people are left for the houseguests to vote to eliminate. This season, the jury started after 10 players were evicted. This phase of the game is when the HOH now only has to nominate two houseguests for eviction, and the BB Blockbuster is no longer played. Also, the evicted houseguests live in the jury house, anticipating the finale in which they get to vote on the season’s winner.

From left to right: Vince Panaro, Ashley Hollis, Morgan Pope.

Ashley (Winner): I couldn’t remember her name until the last of 39 episodes.

Isn’t it ironic that the winner of the season was one of the least memorable players? Ashley didn’t make any game moves until the last episode. In her finale speech, she framed her strategic inaction as an intentional part of her social game…never seen that strategy before! But hey, it worked… (ignoring the fact that the only reason she won was because everyone hated the finalist she was up against). But seriously, I hate it when floaters win!

Vince (Runner up): The unemployed crybaby who ragebaited America by cheating on his girlfriend of seven years.

VINCE!!!!! I can rant all day about this man. From a game standpoint, Vince did extremely well. He was a part of the majority of alliances and won the most Head of Household competitions, making him the most powerful and influential player of the season by far. However, Vince made a lot of people mad—including most of America. To start, he promised almost every single houseguest a final-two alliance, leaving the entire cast feeling betrayed and bitter toward him. He repeatedly lied and exploited others’ trust, only to beg for their forgiveness afterward. Vince also cried at the smallest inconveniences. Worst of all, however, was his close relationship with Morgan, a fellow houseguest with whom he slept, shared kisses, and even discussed the mathematical probability of them getting together. To give you some perspective, Vince has a girlfriend of seven years back home. She broke up with him while he was still in the Big Brother house, and when he returned from the show, Vince somehow convinced her to get back together by promising never to talk to Morgan again. For better or for worse, Vince is the name who will be remembered from season 27.

Morgan (Juror #7): Vince’s extremely “close friend” who couldn’t win when it mattered most.

Morgan was a powerful player in the game, constantly putting herself in the perfect position to survive another week in the house. In the first 6 weeks, she was winless and instead relied on her social game to get her through the weeks, while in the latter half of the game, she began to destroy her competitors in, ultimately reaching the final three. Throughout the game, she became extremely attached to Vince, to a concerning extent. Zingbot even accused her of being his girlfriend. It got so bad!! Obviously, she viewed their relationship differently. In multiple interviews post-game, she stated that their relationship was platonic and there was no showmance going on between them. At the end of the game, she held two head of household wins and five vetos (those of which were won consecutively) but was unable to win the 3rd part of the final head of household, eventually placing third due to Ashley’s decision to take Vince to the final two.

Ava (Juror #6): The psychedelic comedic relief.

Ava, the New York aura reader, was the most unthreatening player of the season. She was bad at competitions and uninvolved in the drama-ridden social game. Except for the occasional rant about another houseguest, Ava was happy to just be there. And, honestly, good for her.

Keanu (Juror #5): The competition beast whom everyone yelled at.

Keanu was a beast at competitions, but he was taken advantage of socially. Time and time again, Keanu gave his trust and put his game on the line for other players, but his trust was not reciprocated, therefore forcing him to compete so much in order to stay in the game. Keanu also was yelled at a lot during the season (Jimmy, Rachel, Ashley, Ava…) since the houseguests apparently saw him as the biggest threat in the season and thought targeting him would help build up their resumes. Personally, I’d take that as a compliment.

Lauren (Juror #4): Naive to the reality of the social aspect to the game

Lauren did not seem too memorable until the latter half of the game. The night she was evicted was the surprise double eviction night of the season. After winning the BB Blockbuster in the first eviction of the night, she ended up losing the HOH and the POV, ultimately ending in her eviction. She did win two HOH comps and three vetos and was rarely put on the block, but her social game seemed doomed from the start because of Vince and Morgan. Lauren’s final two with Vince put her into a situation in which she made every decision for herself, and for Vince, which Morgan did not agree with. The two girls could never see eye to eye on a variety of issues, which led to Morgan pressuring Vince to get Lauren out. Overall, her position in the game never seemed that influential in comparison to other houseguests such as Keanu or Rachel.

Kelley (Juror #3): She volunteered to be on the block multiple times. Who does that?

This girl was nominated for eviction the first four weeks in a row of the game. Her initial strategy was to volunteer (yes, you read that right– VOLUNTEER) to go on the block, hoping that she would gain some trust with whoever the current HOH was at the time and later receive an IOU in return for her actions. She also was very annoying. She would make many decisions and turn to blame it on other people and proceed to cry about it.

Will (Juror #2): The funny old timer.

Will honestly just brought good old humor back into the house. He openly shared with America his aversion toward the other houseguests and his longing for a fast forward button through the eternal conversations he was forced to endure (along with a pause button).

Rachel (Juror #1): Queen of Big Brother, who dropped her crown disastrously.

Rachel Reilly is one of the most famous Big Brother contestants to date, competing on 3 seasons (12, 13, and 27) including winning season 13. She met her current husband  (est. 2012) Brandon Villegas on season 12, competed alongside him during season 13, and had two children during their time together. She has become idolized as one of the greatest players of Big Brother, mainly due to her dramatic character. Some of her one liners got me crying tears of laughter (please Google her famous moments for the sake of your enjoyment). Her TV go-getter attitude made her worth the watch. The funniest thing is that she didn’t even get voted out. She lost a competition by failing to complete a hamster wheel maze, barely getting through the first section (it was hard to watch).

Mickey (10th place): The only problems she created were her own.

Mickey was one of my favorite houseguests at the beginning of the season while she played an honest and trustworthy game. But then, out of nowhere, she turned on her close ally Morgan. This sharp turn in her gameplay didn’t end well.

Katherine (11th place): America’s chosen relationship victim.

During a conversation with Rachel on the couch surrounded by the rest of the houseguests, Rachel tells Katherine to “sit down” which receives the backend response of “I’m sat.” This moment was probably the only thing that got her on screen and put into the memory of the audience. The rest of the show, I don’t really know what she did.

Riley (12th place): The smitten cowboy destroyed by America’s perception of reality.

Riley was simply a sweet country boy from Oklahoma who fell in love with his fellow contestant Katherine. The two were a cute pair from the eyes of avid fans of the show who watched the live episodes. Meanwhile, America did not agree. They believed some of Riley’s behavior on the show was controlling and manipulating, even verbally abusive at times. Note: Riley and Katherine verbalized that they are still together and visiting one another outside of the show (as of finale night).

Zach (13th place): More famous before and after the show (never during, minus the love triangle).

He was in love with Lauren, but Morgan was in love with him (not reciprocated). Before the show, he played minor league baseball with the Washington Nationals for two seasons after college. After the show, Zach hosted a variety of podcast episodes and live video segments with other evicted houseguests to converse about the show, from an inside and outside perspective.

Jimmy (14th place): The snake “that has a bite.”

Jimmy played a key role in forming the main alliances in the game, such as the triple threat alliance with Mickey and Lauren. These alliances led the foundation for the alliances in the late game. On a different note, Jimmy also declared himself the villain of the season (even though he wasn’t all that threatening to the other houseguests). Jimmy, for some reason, declared war on Keanu and was evicted from the game soon thereafter.

Adrian (15th place): The bread-loving backup vote (and sacrifice) for all of the houseguests.

He was just a happy, insect-loving, bread-eating guy whose kindness was taken for granted by the other houseguests. When he was evicted by Lauren and voted out of the house, the game truly erupted into chaos.

Amy (16th place): The unproblematic mom.

She formed an alliance with Rachel because they are both moms. That pretty much sums up her game.

Zae (17th place): Who even are you?

He got his five seconds of fame on Big Brother (and I mean five seconds, literally).
