February Fun Facts

By Eva Chattopadhyay

February may be the shortest month of the year, but it’s filled with more interesting facts and traditions than most people realize. It manages to pack in history, celebrations, and unique things that make it stand out from every other month!

The name “February” comes from the ancient Roman festival called “Februa,” which focused on cleansing, purification, and preparing for the new season ahead. Today February serves as a reset after the excitement of New Year and a break before the start of spring.

One of the most interesting things about February is its unusual length. February has 28 days or 29, if it is a leap year. Because it’s the only month with fewer than 30 days, it’s also the only month that can pass without a full moon. This rare event is called a “Black Moon,” and it only happens once every couple of decades.

February is also known for its birthstone, the amethyst. This purple gemstone represents calmness, clarity, and balance. February has two birth flowers, the violet and the primrose. They symbolize loyalty, hope, and new beginnings.

Of course, we cannot forget the event that February is known for: Valentine’s Day! While it’s now famous for cards, candy, and heart‑shaped everything, it didn’t start out that way. Valentine’s Day began as a religious feast day to celebrate St. Valentine. It only became connected to love during the Middle Ages, when poets and writers started linking the day to romance. Today, it’s one of the most celebrated days of the year!

February is also Black History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the culture, and contributions of African Americans throughout history. February also includes Groundhog Day. People look at the Groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, to see whether he sees his shadow or not. If he does, it’s six more weeks of winter. If not, we have an early spring!

Here are a few famous February birthdays!
