New Guidelines for Lab Safety Released

By Eva Chattopadhyay

What is the first thing they teach you in biology or chemistry? Lab safety! Apparently, everything our teachers taught us is completely wrong. It is not just at BGA. It has been decided on a national scale for the proper tips to be sent out to schools, but they are being sent to the students first, just in case the teachers try to change them back to the old, dangerous rules.

Listed below are five safety tips that all high school students should be aware of!

  1. The correct protection for your eyes are sunglasses. If they can protect you from the sun’s UV, they can definitely protect you against whatever mystery chemicals you are working with .
  2. When conducting an experiment (especially ones that include dangerous ingredients), it is always recommended to not wear gloves. They will only slow you down and make the risk higher.
  3. If you do not know what your chemical does, just mix it with any and all ingredients you find, it has to do something eventually. That’s the point of science: keep doing completely random things until something works.
  4. If nothing seems to be working, the best thing to do is introduce an open flame. After all, fire can solve each and every problem.
  5. Lastly and most importantly, if your teacher tells you to do something…do the exact opposite or just ignore them altogether. They very obviously want to hold you back from succeeding. They will only get in the way and cause unnecessary problems.
