SB: Congratulations for winning the election!
CS: Thanks.
SB: What is your favorite thing about BGA?
CS: The way you’re able to make relationships with your teachers because of how small the classes are. Coming from a public school where you have thirty or forty kinds in each class, you didn’t really have the ability to have a relationship with a teacher. The way that the teachers are caring and are interested in your endeavors in life and not just your academic success.
SB: What are you passionate about achieving in the upcoming year?
CS: I feel like our class sometimes, like Dalia (Diab) said, isn’t the most connected, so I (want everyone) get to know one another through events and activities. If different groups of individuals get to speak to each other, learn about each other, and become friends with each other, then that would be a success.
SB: Speaking of Dalia, when she was doing her campaign she mentioned specific events she wants to put in place. Do you have any specific events in mind (to bring our class together)?
CS: That’s something I will have to talk to other class officers about. I talked to Evangelene Galimore (Sophomore Rep.) and she is passionate about having more pep rallies. Some things that I’m interested in are making up for the activities we missed out on. I want to make up (for) the tug, jamboree, and the end of the year fun events. Throughout the year I want to make sure to have pep rallies and fun events and that we’re getting together as a community.
SB: What are you going to do to make sure your classmates’ voices are heard?
CS: I would consider myself a good listener and a good entertainer of other people’s beliefs. I forget who said it, but the “mark of an educated person is to entertain a belief and not be changed by it,” but definitely to entertain what everybody has to say. There are so many different groups of individuals on our campus, and so if it is specifically a minority group such as Students of Color or students that are LGBTQ+, I would love to work with those groups on campus. I talked to Sean (Williams) today about involving the Students of Color leadership committee in student programming. I would love to represent everybody on our campus in our various weekly programs. I want to have a club of the week or a student organization of the week so that everyone would get to learn about the people on our campus.
SB: Are you going to take any steps to build a relationship with the new head of the upper school and student council?
CS: Definitely. I was on the committee that helped rate the three finalists for the new head of upper school, so reaching out to him while already having a connection…(building a relationship) will be a priority because anything that happens on campus can be shot down by the Dean of Students or the Head of the Upper School, so having that relationship with him, knowing his name before most people on campus did, will set me up for success with communicating with administration. As for student council, definitely because they are the ones that are going to affect the social change on campus.
SB: Perfect! Well, that’s all my questions. Thank you so much and congratulations again.
CS: You’re welcome. Thanks.
