The Met Gala

By Ella McLay

The recent popular event, the Met Gala, creates a need to discuss the question: “what is fashion?” From outrageous to elegant, we see a compilation of outfits that allow for a multitude of discussions on fashion and an initial attraction to the eye. Let’s look at some of the Met Gala “get-ups” and let’s talk about it.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky

Rhianna, in her modern day duvet, and A$AP Rocky, in his 1980’s quilt, somehow made their way into the Met Gala. Initially, the eye catches an unfavorable look, but maybe this is just because A$AP’s quilt has a not so great color scheme. Furthermore, it looks like this poor man can’t access his arms. I can maybe see how Rhianna’s get up can be an okay look. It is black, which is always a go to color, but I am not sure if the style works for me. This duo gets a rating of 4/10.

JB and Hailey Bieber

Justin and Hailey Bieber had a different take on their duo look. They went for a more simple, black and white theme, even though I think JB forgot to hem his slacks in time. I love Hailey’s classic black pencil dress, but I am not sure if it is enough for a Met Gala. However, it does create an immediate positive attraction to the eye. JB, on the other hand, also went simple but did not execute it well. I hate what is happening with his pants (and his hair) and maybe it is the incredibly awkward stance he has going on. But overall, I rate this a 6/10.

Iman’s Met Gala Look

Yes. Iman’s look is the best ratio of elegant and outrageous, and an incredible example of a once in a lifetime Met Gala look. The colors and the head piece just make her look like a goddess, and she stole the show. The stylish gold jumper is not completely taken over by the feathers, but still allows attention to her feathers. The headpiece also highlights her gorgeous makeup. This look is an eye catcher and in a positive way. This outfit gets a rating of 10/10.

In conclusion, these comments may have been a bit harsh, but I do understand that fashion is different to everyone. This Met Gala has proven to me that the question: “what is fashion?”, is inconclusive. It is different to everyone, and it can be anything. It may not appeal to some or any, but fashion is what you make it.
