- The Blair Witch Project: The Blair Witch Project follows three film students seeking information and video footage about a murderous local legend, the Blair Witch. The students travel to the small town where the legend originated and ask local townspeople about their experiences with the Blair Witch. Then they set out into the woods to attempt to create their own experiences with the local legend. Their trip begins to go south when they mysteriously lose their way in the unfamiliar woods and frightening noises keep them awake. What makes this movie so eerie is that it is a “moc-doc,” meaning that it is shot to look like an actual documentary and is shot on a camcorder. The movie opens with, “In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found.” The directors set the movie up to look as realistic as possible, which is what makes The Blair Witch Project so haunting and creepy.

- The Shining: The Shining is an unforgettable film that follows a man’s descent into madness. When Jack Torrence decides to take the responsibility of a Colorado hotel’s caretaker during the winter off season, he, his wife, and his son move into the hotel alone. Completely isolated in the middle of the mountains, past residents of the hotel reveal themselves to the family members, causing them to question their sanity. The Shining combines elements of realistic, psychological thrillers with fictional horror, along with artistic scenes and camera work to create a unique film that is well known in its genre. The movie is now considered a classic!

- Hereditary: Hereditary centers around a family who, of course, lives in the middle of nowhere in the woods. It opens with the grandmother’s funeral. In life, she was very devoted to her religion and very secretive in her rituals. After her death, the family cannot seem to outrun her legacy and unfinished pursuits left behind in her strange practices. The movie focuses on the inability to escape one’s bloodline, hence the title Hereditary. The film is an artistic, psychological thriller that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats for the entirety. The movie lacks typical horror movie cliches, such as clumsy protagonists and excessive jump scares, and instead conveys a sense of realism in order to frighten viewers. Hereditary provides two important functions that horror movies are made to provide— the movie scares viewers while watching it and continues to replay in your head after finishing it. The movie is truly terrifying and will force you to sleep with your light on for the following weeks after watching it.
